Daylight Savings - Sleep Tips!

Snoozy Juniors blog posts

As daylight saving changes approach, parents may be wondering how to adjust their child's sleep times to the new schedule. While the change in time can be a little disruptive for children who thrive on routine, there are a few tips and tricks that parents can use to help their little ones adjust to the new schedule.

Tip #1: Gradually Shift Feed and Sleep Times

The best way to help a child adjust to the time change is to gradually shift their feed and sleep times over a few days leading up to daylight saving. Start by shifting your baby's schedule by 15 minutes each day until you reach the desired schedule. For example, if your baby usually naps at 9 am, start by putting them down at 8:45 am, then 8:30 am, and so on until they are napping at 9 am according to the new time.

*You can speed up the process by adjusting by 15 mins each day (you would the process on Thursday rather than Monday. This is a less gradual approach, and would suit children that are less affected by routine changes.

*If you have left it too late and the time change has already happened you can still adjust gradually by 15 mins the following week.

Tip #2: Use Light to Your Advantage

Exposure to natural light can help regulate sleep-wake cycles. In the days leading up to daylight saving, try to get your child outside in the morning or early afternoon. This will help to reinforce their circadian rhythm and make it easier for them to adjust to the new schedule. In addition to this, you should consider making the sleep space as dark as possible to stop light entering the room which can delay the onset of sleep or cause early wakes.

Tip #3: Stick to a Bedtime Routine

A consistent bedtime routine can help your child feel secure and relaxed, which is important for good sleep. Stick to your usual bedtime routine, even if the actual time changes. Your child associates the routine with sleep and this will help them feel more comfortable with the transition.

Tip #4: Be Patient

It may take a few days for your child to adjust to the new schedule, so be patient and give them time to adapt. It's also important to remember that some children may adjust more easily than others. If your child is having trouble adjusting to the new schedule, try to stay consistent with their routine as possible.
